What led you to begin homeschooling?
At first it was just to be with my son more and give it a try. We thought we can try it and see if it works and take one year at a time. It’s been 9 years now and we still love it.
How did you feel once you decided to homeschool?
I felt excited and overwhelmed. When I started I wasn’t aware of so many options. We tried so many curriculums until we found what fit.
How did life change after you began your homeschool journey?
It became busy in a good way. We love adventure and we really learned to learn through adventure and make every opportunity a learning experience
What was your favorite part of the Geography through Literature study?
I love how it made places and things come alive. Being able to read great books and follow along on the most beautiful maps helped keep things in order and helped keep interest.
What book did the kids enjoy most?
Minn of the Mississippi
Describe the Geography through Literature study in three words.
Adventure, exciting, memorable
Tell us how you got into photography.
Digging through my grandmas boxes of photographs sparked the love of holding memories. I played with disposable cameras snapping pictures of everything as a kid. When I turned 15 my parents bought me my first slr. I taught myself how to use it and have been in love with it since.
Any tips, advice, or encouragement for homeschooling older kids?
Communication is big. When kids are older they are more aware of their needs and can express themselves. Although we know what’s best maybe they have an idea of how to get there in a different way. A way that works for them or is more fun.
What advice would you give to a new mom wanting to learn photography?
Read up on your camera settings. And practice. Practice all the time. Practice in different scenarios with different light. Be patient with yourself and have fun with it.
