This is a really great book, but there is a graphic rape scene. I read this as an adult and it was hard for me to read. There is also abuse. It is a beautiful story and powerful, but it stays with you.

I, too, read this book as an adult. The (homosexual) rape scene I feel is too much for high school. I am pretty liberal in what I have my teens read, but this, although a fantastic book, is too much due to that portion.

I cannot believe that this book is included in the reading list! I expected more from your organization! The beginning of the book contains the graphic (it even talks about the sounds being made) homosexual rape of a child in front of several other young boys. It doesn't matter what happens i the rest of the book; once this garbage has been put into the mind of my children there is no retrieving it!I called BF Books to discuss this, but the man to whom I spoke treated me as if I was ridiculous for not wanting my children to read this garbage. "I've gotten several calls from moms like you," "Well, it's the real world," "Maybe you should be paying attention to what your children are reading." This book and this interaction made me walk away from BF books entirely. Just because something exists in the world does not mean that we should place it in front of our children. Pornography exists, and I don't sit my children down and hit play because "well, it exists in the world."

There should be a content warning in the description for this book selection. The Kite Runner contains language, an explicit homosexual rape scene, and numerous references to that scene. There is no question the author is talented at telling a story, but this this selection will not make it to my bookshelf. Every parent will have their level of tolerance in this area, but content should be fully disclosed up front so literature decisions can be made prior to purchase.
