Our Process
Four decades of experience have taught us a thing or two about creating curriculum that works. Here’s how we do it.
Our literature-based Teaching Character curriculum is designed to help your student or child grow in wisdom and virtue through powerful stories. Using impactful picture books, classic literature, and carefully chosen read-alouds, this engaging curriculum helps families explore essential character traits like kindness, integrity, courage, and empathy.
Each lesson includes author and book resource lists, thought-provoking discussion questions, Bible verse memorization, and simple activities that bring virtues into everyday family life. These lessons are ideal for the elementary years and can be adapted for a wide age range, making them perfect for homeschool families.
Rooted in research showing that literature nurtures compassion, emotional intelligence, and theory of mind, this character-building approach is both meaningful and effective.
Whether you’re just beginning your homeschool journey or adding depth to your current elementary curriculum, Teaching Character helps you guide your child’s heart and mind—one meaningful book at a time.

So far we have really loved the books we have read. I will say there are a few books that are geared toward specific genders however I have a boy and girls so for our family that worked out well that I bought all the books. I will not have my girls read "The Whipping Boy" or "The Happy Prince" or "The Little Prince". As a girl myself I would not have wanted to read those as a child. As for my son, he will not be reading "The Hundred Dresses" or "A Gathering of Days" but otherwise we have loved this as much as the Elementary study.
Beautiful Feet "Teaching Character Through Literature" is authored by home school graduate, Rebecca Manor. She is the author of Beautiful Feet's "A History of Science", "The History of Classical Music", "Medieval History" and co-author of "Early American and World History" and "Ancient History"."Teaching Character Through Literature" is a guide to introduce your child to the world of children's literature. Books not only provide enjoyment, they also shape and influence our lives. The guide is organized according to Primary Readers, Grades Kindergarten -Third Grade and Intermediate Readers, Grades Fourth-Sixth Grade. The book lists are organized by author and title, with a synopsis of the book to assist the parent in choosing books. The books can be read by the parent with their child or the parent can use the guide as a tool to aid in selecting books for the child to read independently. For those parents who want to read the books with their child and desire to draw out the lessons from the text, the author has included study notes and comprehension questions for both Primary and Intermediate categories. Our family favorites from the Primary Readers list include, Good Night Moon, Stone Soup, The Valentine Bears, Miss Rumphius, The Courage of Sarah Noble, One Morning in Maine, The Boxcar Children, and The Matchlock Gun. The Emperor's New Clothes, The Snow Queen, The Steadfast Tin Soldier, Caddie Woodlawn, Caddie Woodlawn's Family, The Secret Garden, Charlotte's Web, The Trumpet of the Swan and Strawberry Girl are the family favorites among the Intermediate Readers list. The guide is divided into the following components: How this Guide is Used, Explanatory notes, Primary Reading List, Study Notes for Primary Readers, Intermediate Reading List, Study Notes for Intermediate Readers, Favorite Adaptations of Bible Stories and Answer Key.Overall our family has been pleased with the Teaching Character Through Literature. We look forward to using Beautiful Feet guides and books as we continue our home education journey.
Character is the primary reason we chose to homeschool our 2 wonderful boys, so when we came across "Teaching Character Through Literature" I knew instinctively that this was meant for our family. Immediately, I fell in love with their recommendations. Our boys (ages 6 & 10) have loved every book that we have chosen from the guide. We are without a doubt, excited to continue our next school year with Beautiful Feet Books - Geography and Early American History.
