Seasons Afield is a nature-based homeschool science curriculum for elementary students in Kindergarten-3rd grade students, designed to connect school, nature, and home in a meaningful way, inspired by the Schullandheim approach to science and nature study. This German educational philosophy emphasizes learning through immersion in nature, fostering a deep understanding of the natural world.
This curriculum is literature-based, leveraging beautiful and impactful stories for memorable lessons and character development rather than textbooks. Field guide notecards and watercolor cards allow your kids to bring their studies into the natural world.

Through the seasons, students explore different units focused on topics such as plant and animal life cycles, weather patterns, moon phases, water cycle, basic botany, ecosystems, and beyond. Through nature-inspired handicrafts, art appreciation, and recipes, students engage in both creative and scientific discovery, all while developing important life skills and a sense of responsibility for the environment.
Seasons Afield meets standards for Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and includes field notecards and field watercolor cards to document observations and foster scientific thinking.

Designed to inspire a lifelong love of nature and learning, Seasons Afield supports students in building a holistic understanding of science, art, and life. Like all our studies, lessons are designed to be flexible, allowing families to tailor activities and pace to meet the needs of their students.

From rocks and minerals to space and climate, our self-paced course will guide parents and students through an earth science curriculum geared for kindergarten, 1st grade, 2nd grade, and 3rd grade inspiring questions, critical thinking, and a love of environmental science.

*We highly recommend each student has their own notebook, fieldnote & water color cards.

Nature Study

We loved this nature study! It was our favorite study out of everything we did last year! We loved all the books that went with it (I think we skipped one book). The additional field guide cards and watercolor cards are great! It’s nice having everything you need and ready to go when you start the lesson. We did all the experiments and everything turned out correctly except we did not have luck with sprouting a mango. We loved all the recipes! My sons still make the refrigerator pickles. I really loved how this study incorporated watercolor painting. My son who did not like watercolor prior to this study, now enjoys it and has gotten good at it. My other son has moved on to making watercolor greeting cards and is selling them at our local farmer’s market! Overall I would highly recommend this study! I’m really hoping they make another one for grades 4-6.
Pictures are of the ice candle and two watercolor pictures from the book. My sons were 7 and 9 during this study.
*Referring to the post about the watercolor book pages being wrong- yes that is true. We had one book with the correct page numbers and the other was wrong. I’m guessing the watercolor with me book updated and the page numbers are different. Both of our books were the same as far as pages to paint but actual page numbers were different.

I love this curriculum! I have tried a few

I love this curriculum! I have tried a few different nature studies and nothing comes close to this one! Can you please make more?! I love the blend of slow, relaxed nature observations, beautiful stories, and hands on experiments. It is just the right blend of relaxed and formal learning.

I am so impressed with this guide

I am so impressed with this guide. I absolutely love nature study and have done quite a few different curriculums and programs with my kids. This is my absolute favorite. It is for K-4, but I believe everyone in the family will enjoy it and learn from it. The layout is beautiful and inviting. The projects are fun, but also not too complicated. It is perfect for learning and making memories with my kids.

Highly recommend.

We started Seasons Afield last week, and we started with the bloom lesson. It was a very engaging lesson that my children and I both thoroughly enjoyed! My 6 year old daughter could not get enough of the dissecting flowers, I don't know if I have ever seen her that involved in a nature lesson. We adapted the guide to fit our seasonal needs, and included a few different activities where I needed to. This is a great program that you can follow step by step or adapt and use as a tool in your children's education. We are all excited to continue this nature and science program and I would 10/10 recommend!

Fun Out of Season

We really enjoy this study. I did have to completely rework it though as things like making jam in fall are not seasonally appropriate (The listed berries are available in June, July, and August in the northeastern US), which makes this a summer activity. Still a great activity, but this study felt like it was written somewhere without seasons rather than with different seasons. Several other items were similarly randomly assigned.

Mostly a Winner

This curriculum is beautiful and exactly what we needed. One annoying little problem that I don' tsee anyone else mentioning so it is making me questions where I went wrong (is there multiple versions of the Watercolor with Me In the Forest book?). None of the referenced pages in the text book aligns with the actual pages in the Watercolor book so I had to go through and put post-it notes throughout the book with the real page numbers.

Doable Nature Study

Finally something that helped me actually do nature study. I know it should be simple but remembering which books we should read, to pull out the watercolors, to review basic science concepts we see every day in nature.....this guide makes all those things feel like they are in easy reach. The Field notes and watercolor packets are a must, get one for each student (and yourself!). We very much enjoyed our year following this study.

Disappointed

We had been using another nature curriculum for a few years and decided to try this last fall. It has a great book list, but that’s about as far as I can recommend it. It simply is not a nature study or natural science curriculum. It has lots of fiction and art tutorials, art study, handcraft, and a few activities with very specialized supplies. Very little nature study information is supplied.

Hi Shannon,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We’re genuinely sorry to hear that this study didn’t meet your expectations.

Seasons Afield was designed to meet Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) while offerring a gentle, observation-driven introduction to science. Our goal is to encourage curiosity and connection with the natural world while presenting key scientific ideas appropriate for K-3rd students.

We’re grateful for your feedback and always looking for ways to better serve homeschool families. Please feel free to reach out if there’s anything we can do to help.

Truly Beautiful

My kids and I have really enjoyed this guide. Full of great books! When the kids ask to do history every day you know it’s a winner! (: Thank y’all for making something truly beautiful.

Lovely elementary science/nature study

I used this for grades 1 and 4 with a tag-along preschooler. Two of them really enjoyed the regular water colors (I did his with the girls when he opted out), the books were great, and my now-6 year old still asks for green tea with honey, which she was first willing to try because of this study!

So intensely beautiful!

I wish all of my curriculum could look and feel like this. It is my favorite to just look at-- eye candy! I love the projects too. My kids enjoyed doing many of the activities. Also Brambley Hedge is one of our favorite books. The whole feel of the book is like walking in a beautiful garden. All of the senses are fed.

I hate to be the dissenting review here, but this was a huge miss for our family. I have been homeschooling for 7 years and have done several nature studies...this was probably the worst. The information presented in each lesson is choppy, all over the place and doesn't go very deep into any one thing. For example, the lesson titled "Explore" has you learning a little bit about altitude, what are puns and similes, water coloring a dogwood rose, studying a sunset, talking about the tilt of the earth, making a compass map out of sticks, and cooking a bilberry soup (bilberries are from Sweden so we read a bit about Sweden too). It felt very much like they just threw a bunch of different things together without going into too much detail about any one thing. Sadly, I feel like this was a wasted year, with too many things crammed in but not fleshed out fully. If your kid is young and enjoys reading books about nature and water coloring, a quick trip to the library and craft store would be a lot cheaper and possibly more educational.

Hi Lindsey,

Thank you for sharing your feedback. We’re truly sorry to hear that your experience with this study didn’t meet your expectations.

We want to note that Seasons Afield meets Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and is intentionally crafted as a gentle, observation-based approach to science—one that nurtures curiosity and a love of the natural world while still exploring important scientific concepts at a grade-appropriate depth.

We appreciate your input and are always working to improve and support homeschool families in meaningful ways. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to our team if we can offer further support or guidance.

We are going to do this program again after first completing it two years ago. It’s is so charming, gentle, engaging, visually pleasing, and just beautiful. I really wish BFB would make a part two because there is nothing like this on the market from anyone. I would love to see a grade 3-6 Seasons Afield 🙏🙏🙏

We have struggled to utilize any homeschool curriculums due to my kids' creativity, rapidly evolving interests, and intense curiosities. This curriculum is the exception! It feels more like a beautiful collection of inspirational activities than a curriculum. It saves me time, provides my kids with ton of flexibility and creative opportunities, gets us outside, and is full of quality materials we all enjoy. My kids are 2, 6, and 8 and can easily all do these activities alongside one another at a variety of levels. Please make more science curriculum like this one so we can continue using it for years to come!

I have a tendency to get bogged down in the work and not take time for the beauty, but this curriculum helps me slow down and makes it so easy to bring the beauty back into our homeschool.

I’ve used several BF guides and this is the first lower elementary one I’ve used. I bought it for 3rd grade twins. We absolutely LOVED it and I wish there was a part 2, we didn’t want the curriculum to end. I’ve never felt that way about a science oriented book before. It was so gentle and easy to use, and we had a lot of fun doing the activities. Thank you so much for such an engaging book!
