Whether you are new to homeschooling, have been homeschooling for years, or just new to us, this guide will cover whether BFB is the right choice for your family.
1. Do you enjoy a well-written story?
If you do, great! Our history, geography, and social studies curricula is built upon excellent literature. The vast majority of the books in our studies meet the literature definition which is “having excellence of form or expression and expressing ideas of permanent or universal interest.” Teaching history through the power of story is the best way to ignite a child’s natural curiosity about the world around them. That’s why we don't include textbooks, worksheets, and busywork.
2. Do you like creating your own history curriculum?
If you don’t, great! We’ve spent over 30 years developing teacher guides that allow you to jump into a literature-rich history study with no prep work. No researching which books are worth reading, no figuring out the chronological sequence, no creating questions, and assignments. Get the teacher guide, get the books, start learning and teaching history. If you answered "yes" to this question, our studies provide flexibility in catering to your children's learning styles and needs.
3. Did you love learning about history or hate it?
What we’ve found over the last couple of decades of serving homeschool families is that parents who hated learning about history during their school days will discover how incredible the subject can be when it’s learned through great books. We hear from parents every week that they are learning history for the first time right alongside their children because this approach is so engaging and fun. For you history lovers, you’re going to love history even more.
4. Do you want to teach all your children at once?
We highly encourage every family to use one study with as many of their children as possible. Of course there are limitations to this but if your children are within 2 or 3 grade levels then most likely using one study for both will be your best option. If the age gap is larger then you can either use one study and supplement or choose two separate studies. Want a recommendation for your family? Give us a call or send us an email, we’d love to hear from you.
5. Do you want your children to love learning or memorize facts?
While memorization is an impressive skill that can be developed, our vision for education is based on nurturing each person's innate ability to learn, through stories. History itself is a collection of stories and when those stories come to life through the words of a gifted writer and illustrator that’s when real learning takes place. If you have a desire to instill your values in your children, to give them people to admire from history, to show them the resiliency of the human spirit; then we believe our curriculum will be a good fit for your family.
