About the Author: 

Elizabeth Janet Gray Vining (1902-1999), born Elizabeth Janet Gray and also known as Elizabeth Gray Vining, was a professional librarian who tutored Emperor Akihito of Japan in English while he was the Crown Prince. (She also tutored other members of the Imperial Household: Prince Hitachi and Princesses Kazuko, Atsuko, and Takako.) For her work, she was awarded the Third Order of the Sacred Crown. A Quaker, she was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was an author with over 60 works, and was awarded a Newbery medal for Adam of the Road. She was a graduate of Bryn Mawr College, class of 1923.
