This Early American History homeschool curriculum for 4th–6th grade invites students to explore the people, ideas, and events that shaped the United States. Designed for upper elementary and early middle school students, this literature-based course supports academic growth while building critical thinking skills, moral reasoning, and a meaningful connection to the past.

At the heart of this study are carefully selected living books with compelling narratives that bring history to life. These texts engage students emotionally and intellectually, helping them develop empathy, nurture character, and retain understanding through memorable stories.

Covering major American History events from 1000 AD to the mid-1800s, including Indigenous cultures, colonization, the Constitution, and westward expansion, this course integrates primary sources, geography, and social studies concepts. Students explore context through mapping activities, historical recipes, and hands-on activities that make learning interactive and immersive. Like all of our courses, this study is fully customizable, allowing families to adapt lessons, activities, and resources to best suit their values and goals.

Each lesson includes thoughtful questions, reading prompts, and opportunities for reflection, encouraging students to connect with the past and consider its relevance today. These experiences foster both academic growth and moral insight.

Ideal for 4th, 5th, and 6th grade learners, this curriculum offers flexible resources for homeschool families, co-ops, and small schools. More than just a history program, it encourages students to think critically, live responsibly, and engage deeply with the people and ideas that shaped our nation.

*Note: If you are teaching multiple students, we recommend that each child have their own timeline and notebook.

*Curriculum Pack now includes both a print and digital Teacher Guide

I taught this to a 6th grader and 4th grader this year. They loved every minute of it! We learned so much, and we had many great discussions and opportunities to think critically about our history and see both sides. It was well-balanced and exciting. Looking at the scope and sequence, it takes more time than 1 hour per day. We averaged 2-3 at least four days a week and barely got finished. We did some projects, wrote a report, and did most of the notebooking and the timeline. I also added all 40 episodes of Liberty Kids while we studied the Revolutionary War. The kids loved it; it was a great visual compliment to our reading. For sure, a 5-star curriculum!

We have been loving this updated edition of Early American History Intermediate! The teacher book is beautiful! Much more information - I especially appreciate the Rabbit Trails booklists as my son is a voracious reader! As with all BFB studies, this is perfectly customizable! You can make this exactly what you want it to be! It's positively excellent and I look forward to moving onto Modern American next school year! Oh - and I was positively overjoyed that this study ended with Robert Smalls! Because his home is here in my hometown! Perfect field trip ending for this study! And, AND it goes perfectly with the new American Geography! Thank BFB!!

We have used Beautiful Feet before and were pleased, but this set of curriculum has been disappointing. First of all, several things were not included in the shipment. Secondly, many, not all, of the books are incredibly boring. My children struggled to enjoy many of the books. We are such a reading family so this was a huge disappointment to us! Each time we would pick up a new book, they would comment how they hope it’s not a boring one like many of the others. There is so much deep and wonderful literature so I do not understand this selection of books! It’s an expensive curriculum, and I am doubtful that I will order Beautiful Feet again. Hopeful that improvements will be made so that many children would learn to love reading and history and not dread it!

We haven't started using this yet so I can't speak to how it will work for us. However, I am very disappointed that a required book isn't included in the full curriculum package. In Lesson 72 the Teacher's guide asks us to read Path to the Pacific: The Story of Sacagawea. This book is not included and must be ordered seperately. Frustrated that I had an all-in curriculum that isn't all-in.

*BFB REPLY - "You're correct, the book Path to the Pacific fell out of print but we replaced it with Of Courage Undaunted by James Daugherty. We also added an addendum to the guide to replace these lessons with notes on this new book. If you did not receive Of Courage Undaunted or the study notes please let us know and we would be happy to send them to you.

Our family is not a book loving family. So, I went out of my comfort zone and ordered BF Early American History Intermediate. History has always been very dry for us. I read to my kids every day and they actually learned a lot and enjoyed history for the first time! I plan on doing Modern History this year. BF provides all the books and an easy book with lesson plans making this curriculum very easy to use.

We used this last year for my boys and enjoyed nearly all of the books. We read them outloud and then write or discuss the questions.

I can't recommend this curriculum to enough people. We used it for my daughter's 4th grade year. I would say the only problem we had was that she loved the books so much that several times when I would assign her the reading, she would tell me she finished the book already!!! She took them to bed and read them over and over all year. We absolutely love this curriculum.

My 5th grade son and I have gone through BF EA Intermediate this year and have thoroughly enjoyed it. We had tried the textbook approach before that and it just didn't spark his interest. BF has though! He really enjoys it.

We just finished up the early American package and loved it! The kids looked forward to the stories and retained so much info. I was surprised how much they learned!

This was the first guide we used and we enjoyed every book. My girls, 11 and 9, both listened intently and learned so much. I thought the variety in books were interesting. The favorite book was The Vikings, making it the perfect book to start with. I also learned many interesting facts. We are looking forward to studying World and America history.

Wonderful curriculum...book selections are interesting and well written, narrating skills improved with use of inquiries, and children absolutely love history class! My daughter's notebook is full of lovely reports, maps, quotes and facts! The one change that I would suggest is to have a few, sample, high quality reports for students to read. I found some on the Internet.

We used Early American History Intermediate for my 6th grader this year. We loved the literature used throughout. My son learned a lot through reading "living books" along with notebooking, mapping and using the timeline. We will look forward to using Beautiful Feet in the Future.
